Riot (Damages) Act 1886 - Applications for Compensation
We are currently in discussion with the Government over their compensation scheme and we have been recently advised of change in relation to making claims.
The Riot Damages Act 1886 provides for compensation to be paid by the local Police Authority for losses through injury, destruction or stealing, to houses, shops and other buildings or their contents. The Act does not provide for compensation to be paid for damage to or theft of a vehicle unless that vehicle was housed within a building. It also excludes personal injuries, compensation for non-material losses, such as interruption to trading. No costs will be allowed to any person claiming.
If you believe that you have a claim due to an incident which you believe may be covered by the Riot Damages Act 1886:
Firstly, contact your own insurer and if covered under existing policies pursue a claim through your insurance company. They will make a claim to the local Police Authority on your behalf. If the incident was in Nottinghamshire, they may submit a claim to the Nottinghamshire Police Authority.
Insurance companies submitting claims on behalf of their clients or those with exclusion clauses on existing policies should send completed claim forms to:
Nottinghamshire Police Authority, County Hall, West Bridgford, Nottinghamshire NG2 7QP
If you are not insured please complete the claim form and send it to:
    PO Box 26948, Glasgow, Scotland G2 9DP
You can download a claim form here.
You have 42 days to make a claim for compensation. These 42 days are counted from the first day after the damage occurred.
For guidance on completing the claim form, contact the claims department by telephone on 0845 641 4925, or email the address below: riotclaimsnotification@cl-uk.com
If a claim is submitted in relation to an incident in Nottinghamshire, we will work with the Nottinghamshire Police to ascertain whether the incident that led to your loss occurred in circumstances where a claim may be met under the Riot Damages Act 1886.
