- A custody visitor is a volunteer who makes surprise visits to the cells to check that detainees are being well looked after. Custody visitors find the role particularly rewarding and an excellent way to perform an important role, with responsibilities, without a high time requirement.
Custody visitors provide an impartial view of custody arrangements on behalf of the local community. Their findings are reported back to the Police Authority and if there is a problem, the Police Authority will ensure matters that the appropriate action is taken.
Custody visitors must be over 18 and live in Nottinghamshire. Full training is provided. For more information about the work that Custody Visitors carry out, click on the reports below:

- Animal Welfare Lay Visiting Scheme
- In a similar way to Custody Visitors, Animal Welfare Visitors provide an independent check that the police dogs and horses are being cared for properly.
Animal Welfare Visitors visit the police stables and kennels to observe training of police dogs, to check on the condition and welfare of the animal and then reporting their findings back to the Authority. This is a purely voluntary role for which training is provided, although experience with animals is advantageous.
